This season, the Minutemen return 2021 All Non-Public First Team selections Molly Egan ’24 and Joanna Yu ’25, and All Non-Public Third Team selections Ayanna Varma ’25 and Hilary Adelman ’23. Newark Academy is expected to be a strong contender in postseason play after only graduating one key senior, second doubles player Melanie Kramarchuk ’22.
In an official NJ.com poll, the team has been ranked fourth in the state for the upcoming season amongst top competitors. This year, the team will be led by captains Hilary, Mallika Reddy ‘23, and Molly. In addition, Head Coach Lou Scerra returns for his third season at the helm, in hopes of guiding the squad to another competitive run. The Minutemen will compete in the American Division of the Super Essex Conference, facing top-ranked teams including MKA, Millburn, West Essex, Livingston and Montclair.
Over the course of the team’s history, they have accumulated 25 sectional titles, 24 state titles, and nine TOC titles. Although the TOC is no longer a goal for redemption as last season was its final run, the Minutemen hope to defend their state championship title this year.
The 2022 season begins on Tuesday, September 6 at West Essex at 4 p.m. in North Caldwell, NJ.
